I would advise against 0w20 because it would probably start leaking like mad and using a lot of oil because it would be so thin to easily pass through the piston rings, people have also reported starting problems with lower viscosity oils.
They are made for 15W40, maybe 10w40 but not on a high miler. I had one of these Golf II diesels for my first car
