There miiiiight be an 80s v dub up at the junkyard... definitely not a golf, but you never know what's cross compatible. I also know there's a 70s rabbit up there, but that thing's pretty swiss cheesed. I was too distracted to pay attention and remember exactly what the 80s vw was or if I'm actually telling the truth, so sorry to tease. I <3 the junkyard and I know you do too.

I would advise against 0w20 because it would probably start leaking like mad and using a lot of oil because it would be so thin to easily pass through the piston rings, people have also reported starting problems with lower viscosity oils.
They are made for 15W40, maybe 10w40 but not on a high miler. I had one of these Golf II diesels for my first car

It calls for 5w30, iirc. 0w20 is, in essence, 5w20, with additives that effectively thin it to (almost) 0 viscosity when it's cold. Since oil thickens as it warms up, I don't really see where the issue would be. I'm running 15 cold viscosity oil right now, and it doesn't burn oil when it's cold... So 20 weight shouldn't burn when it's warm and clearances are tighter...

Pretty sure oil thins as it warms...

Viscosity increases, so it's less likely to run out away from where it should be.
I've never had an engine that used significantly more oil or made more noise by going to a lower viscosity oil.

I want to report that I'm on part for my best tank yet, coincidentally being the first reported tank for this car in the garage here on EM.
420 miles, and the gauge is floating around 1/2 tank, which puts me in line for a 600 mile fill, nearly 100 miles higher than the last two tanks, which averaged 44mpg between them.

I want to get two more of those hubcaps... They're stainless, and appear pretty aero.
I probably won't, though. More than likely, I'll just cut some coro-discs or something.
