How about cranking up the pressure ?
Have a look on the sidewall what the tyres will stand, and gradually increase the pressure.
If you don't really need it, remove the roof bars entirely.

I did try with higher pressures but I found it was wearing the centre of the tread really quickly on my last set of tyres and reducing breaking grip in emergencies. I have reduced the pressured more for maintaining the tyre tread and safety.
I have thought about removing the roof bars but I do use a ladder rack fairly frequently and it would be such a pain to get into the roof lining to refit it.
Also I like proving a point to other drivers at work that I can do it with only a change in behaviour and adding only 5 minutes to a 40 minute commute.
There's a chap at work who has a Honda Civic hybrid and only gets 50imp mpg on a 45 mile commute.
