Made it out and back -200 miles round -safely, including the one diesel engine in the back seat, and on ~1/4 tank of fuel by the gauge. (probably closer to 3/8). Trip meter is at 250 ish, and the gauge is at 3/4.

I ended up buying one engine for $241, from an early Rabbit, and committed myself to buying a fairly nice 1983 Volkswagen Vanagon with 80k original miles, needing a diesel engine, for $500.
