Leaving in a min for Oneonta to look at a couple 1.6D VW engines for a song. First long trip in the Golf... Hopefully all goes well.
717.525.1654 if anyone wants to check up on me. Weathers fair, but some wetness.

Made it out and back -200 miles round -safely, including the one diesel engine in the back seat, and on ~1/4 tank of fuel by the gauge. (probably closer to 3/8). Trip meter is at 250 ish, and the gauge is at 3/4.
I ended up buying one engine for $241, from an early Rabbit, and committed myself to buying a fairly nice 1983 Volkswagen Vanagon with 80k original miles, needing a diesel engine, for $500.

I can often be heard to exclaim "TMP!". (Too Many Projects!) Sometimes TMFP!
You win hands down though.

How unrealistic is it to hope for 70mpg with the following mods:
smooth wheels up front,
rear skirts,
mirror delete,
grille block
Air dam
kill switch
Rear visor (very short kamm extension)
Alt delete
My driving is mostly rural 30-50 mph. Seem to be averaging 50mpg or so on straight ULSD.
Input?

Rough guesstimate from experimenting on my car & reading other's tests...

dunno
Not much more than you're getting using the key :P

~1-2%
~10% in my 1.0L gasser at 70 km/h
So that's a 19% boost in the upper range, @ 50 mpg baseline = 59.5
Most of my measurements were made at 50-55 mph though.
Give or take.

I dont use the key off much, actually. I just let it idle while coasting, which, admittedly, doesn't happen much, partially for the lack of brakes, and partially because most coasting around here ends up making the car go faster than the psl considerably, and sometimes faster than safety would suggest. There are a few times when I could do some EOC, though, that I just don't, instead using DFCO and no-load (the point in the throttle where you could easily slide the shifter in/out of gear) to maintain speed, which, to me, is a gross waste of fuel.
Once my 2"exhaust is done, I'm also looking to do a full belly with a rear lift@ 3° to the horizon.
I also forgot to mention that I'm gettin rid of the vacuum pump, but I have no clue what kind of power its sucking... I just know it's wasted.

There's something that looks a whole lot like your car, dark blue, sittin up near my parents' place without a license plate on it. I dunno if it's diesel or not. Just thought I'd inform you in case you'd want me to inquire for some reason or another. TMFPFTW!
