I don't see that as a muddle, it's the normal thing to do when they're clueless.

I've spent a few years in tech customer service, I still know the tricks. Angry agitated customer doesn't really work, so I won't play that game.

So I'll happily give them time to sort difficult issues.
But don't worry, I'll equally happily give them hell for not sorting it eventually

My mates one is currently being repaired free of charge after sending emails to BMW UK with the GMBH lot CC'd in..
Such a scheme worked well for a friend of mine with an Audi
They send him on his way with a loose wheel !

Is public transport not a short term option- or carshare?
Public transport ?
There is no public transport whatsoever where I work - even though that's in the largest economic zone of the country : Antwerp Harbour.

It's also 5 miles to the nearest bus stop of my employer's bus network, and I'd have to be there well before I usually start from home.
No guarantee that I'd still find my bike or moped there after working the graveyard shift.
So that's not really a viable option either.
