look for Coroplast, but many things will work for it.
shrink wrap, however, chances are not, it simply doesnt have the strength to withstand high winds, along with road clutter/bugs.

as far as cooling the engine, it really depends on average ambient temp's in your area.
many people have found that leaving a section in the lower part of the front end works better for cooling than any other location. you could leave a small section open and raise the rear end of the hood for allow more heated air to escape.
