I just did remembered, friend had truck version of mkI golf years ago. He did put turbo in it, then he put bigger turbo, turned pump to very rich and I think he was running 2.1bar (30.46) of boost, thing was a rocket and he always beated crap out of it, still it did last very long for his usage, over a year, normally he managed to destroy cars faster.
So I think that engine will tolerate quite a bit.
Of course it is not a problem with FE minded turbo install.
