I didn't get through every post in the thread short on time but for you application I would have looked at a low pressure turbo setup from a Saab they are useless over 3,000 rpm for the most part but very effective in getting the car moving saving on fuel . Low boost under 7 will not need many changes to most cars setup at all. I am not a Diesel guy so it may not apply to you.

Saabs are dirt cheap for parts and plentiful more so than a DSM setup from a eclipse talon to many fast and furious junkyard scrappers looking for those parts and as you found out the parts are beat to heck.

Last turbo car I had was a 85' Buick Grand National hot air non intercooled car that I recently sold the last few parts I had in my garage. they used a garret T3 for the 3.8l v6 and stock pressure was about 12-15 psi under full boost. the manual waste gate required the turning of one nut to adjust the PSI up or down. If you were to go over 20PSI the rule was an upgrade to the fuel pump wiring harness to flow more volts and a in line Walbro fuel pump is what everyone used . Big boys that wanna go fast needed to upgrade injectors and remap the computer I would run 18PSI with a upgraded wiring harness cause factory model was good for stock setting only

I recently sold a garrett T3 turbo for $100 that is what you would get for a core or close to that.

propane injection look at turbo buick and Grand national forums there used to be several easy to install and use kits with basic settings. they would add a 7th injector and pump the propane in conjunction with gas to get more power not sure if there is a method of using the same type of setup of to compensate for the turbo PSI instead of reworking the cars computer to increase the flow of fuel as boost builds.
