Some paper filters are made from recycled material already which reduces landfill to some extent. You can also extend the life of a paper filter by cleaning it - patt out the dirt into a bin or use a carpet vac sucking from the inlet side.

Note to Mrs A if she is reading this - I never do this, honest dear...
