Some paper filters are made from recycled material already which reduces landfill to some extent. You can also extend the life of a paper filter by cleaning it - patt out the dirt into a bin or use a carpet vac sucking from the inlet side.

'Recycle' it on ebay or locally - someone will want one - probably someone in a car with an exhaust so large small children will enter and become lost...
