A bunch of K&N haters on here I see. I'll never use a filter other than a K&N and I'll tell you why:

My family has 3 diesel farm trucks (92 Ram 5.9 Cummins 12v, 99 Ram Cummins 24v, and '02 Ford F250 7.3 powerStroke) pulling loads of hay, cotton trailers, soybeans, you name it with about 1.2 million combined miles on them, all running K&N filters and never had any engine problems, turbos going out, etc that would come from dirt getting in the intake. Most of the time people have problems with them is because the goofballs don't know how to oil them properly.

I don't hate K&N filters. It's a well-made product that trades some filtration for a slight increase in airflow. Whether or not that increase in airflow will increase power depends on the rest of the intake system. If the OEM filter isn't the most restrictive part, then all you're getting is more dirt. I'd use one if I was building a race car for a class that required keeping the original airbox and I wanted to get the most air I could. Otherwise, I'd rather make a bigger paper filter and/or airbox fit.

Maybe I love K&N filters. I find them at the junkyard, take them home, clean and oil them, and get $20-$30 on eBay for them.

For most motors, the K&N isn't needed/beneficial. If you start modifying stuff, it will start being beneficial.
Now, this comes from a guy that measured everything by HP in his turbocharged mustang used for drag racing. A K&N flat replacement... well... it was turbocharged, so less restriction the better. I got a HUGE one.

Honestly, I"ve been toying around with building a stock filter type of box that takes 2 filters instead of one, but then still use the paper filters. I don't know if this would actually be less restrictive, or just allow for more flow.

On another note, you can actually design a mathematically correct intake tube for a certain rpm/displacement/HP. There are calculators out there for that!

Some paper filters are made from recycled material already which reduces landfill to some extent. You can also extend the life of a paper filter by cleaning it - patt out the dirt into a bin or use a carpet vac sucking from the inlet side.

Note to Mrs A if she is reading this - I never do this, honest dear...

'Recycle' it on ebay or locally - someone will want one - probably someone in a car with an exhaust so large small children will enter and become lost...

They are really meant for forced induction when they come into their own, for anything less, especially for n/a engines the difference from stock filter is negligible.

Atleast that is in my experience on many n/a cars (& motorcycles) fitting K&N's.

Of course on older cars that didn't have electric trickery, a blocked filter would just make you run rich, this of course is bad, so in this case, a K&N would be perfect (then so would a new stock air filter element).
