The expansion factor for gasoline is 0.00106 / °C.
If you heat 1 gallon of gas 20°C, it'll expand to 1.0212 gallon.
(Say 10° underground storage temperature vs. 30°C tank temperature.)
That's a 2% difference.

It's not dramatic, but it definitely affects the fill-up in warm weather.
The key factor is not what goes into the tank, but what fuel is still in there.
Filling up with a lot of expanded fuel still in the tank, would show a lower amount of fuel going in, and show artificially better mpg.
