an idea that I have been considering, is a synergy drive type system where the clutch of a standard transmission is replaced with a planetary gear set. The ICE would then be set to a constant RPM that would be its optimum efficiency, all that would require is that the correct resistor replace the accelerator position sensor. Then the motor would determine speed without need to talk to the ice.
