The other day I was hauling a sofa for the parents (90 and 85). Pop was riding with me in my 92 F150 6 cyl manual with no air. He saw Mom brake very early for a red light on a 55 MPH stretch of road. He said look at her braking early. I could tell he was going to criticize her. I told him to watch her, she was going to brake early so she could go through the light at the highest possible speed, thus maintaining her inertia. That's exactly what she did.
He loved it. This is a man who hypermiled a B17 coming back from Berlin so he might have enough fuel left in his tanks to not have to ditch in the North Sea if the bullet holes allowed too much fuel to leak out.
They compete for mileage in their two Cadillac Eldorados and regularly get very close to 30 MPG on the highway.
While none of my family members try as hard as I do for mileage, they all get pretty good mileage in what they drive. The wife averages 29 in her Rogue driving locally. I think it's rated 27 highway.
