I'm pretty sure my girlfriend and I have had the exact same conversation

Sadly, this seems to be the attitude many / most people have.

It is easier to complain about rising prices and related "stress" than it is to actually DO something about it.

It may be just me but it really does seem to be the norm now.

Others attitudes?
I explain if they are interested but most are not so I do my stuff and let them do theirs.

Peter.

It really scares my girlfriend when i reverse with the engine off. And once when i backed out a sloping spot onto a sloping lot and got all the way to the exit without starting my engine, she called me a cheapskate. :P

The other day I was hauling a sofa for the parents (90 and 85). Pop was riding with me in my 92 F150 6 cyl manual with no air. He saw Mom brake very early for a red light on a 55 MPH stretch of road. He said look at her braking early. I could tell he was going to criticize her. I told him to watch her, she was going to brake early so she could go through the light at the highest possible speed, thus maintaining her inertia. That's exactly what she did.

He loved it. This is a man who hypermiled a B17 coming back from Berlin so he might have enough fuel left in his tanks to not have to ditch in the North Sea if the bullet holes allowed too much fuel to leak out.

They compete for mileage in their two Cadillac Eldorados and regularly get very close to 30 MPG on the highway.

While none of my family members try as hard as I do for mileage, they all get pretty good mileage in what they drive. The wife averages 29 in her Rogue driving locally. I think it's rated 27 highway.

regards
Mech

Shut off the outboard engines and maintain around 110-120 Kts

My girlfriend is starting to get in on it some. She drives 75-100 miles some days for her job, and they pay her $0.51/mile, so she's come to rely on that for extra spending cash. I think she's figured out that if she drives slower/more effeciently she can buy more junk.

We've actually started to get fairly competative when we road trip places, each trying to beat the other's mpg. It's fun, and it saves us money.

Please tell him at least one Brit family here still appreciates his efforts and bravery.

My Maternal Step-Grandfather served as a rear gunner on a Lancaster night bomber - the war and what he experienced as an 18 year old disturbed him until his death.

My Paternal Grandfather had a conviction that killing people was wrong so he didn't want to fight. He "did his bit" though, as a medic and saved quite a few lives in North Africa. He was a peaceful man for all his life and missed greatly too.

interesting question on the b17, if it is leaking enough to make a difference on the return trip, won't going slower exacerbate the problem to some degree?

The Wife is all for She's glad that my driving is saving not only money, but resources, emissions, etc.

Dad-in-law, on the other hand, is of the "if the factory did it that way, then that's the way it should be" type, but at the same time his eyebrows go up each time I brag about my newest record tank. He rode with me a few times, but was very nervous (he's usually doing 80km/h in 4th where I'm doing 50 in 5th) and hasn't been in our car for over a year.

My brother-in-law would like to get my milage, but doesn't do diddly-squat about it. He's thought about borrowing our car for vacation thinking that its milage won't change with him behind the wheel.

Our friends don't comment on my driving too much - when they get in they stare out the window (I go so slow that the landscape isn't a blur) until they fall asleep. When they wake up they are happy to find out how little they have to pay for their share of the fuel. The only comment I got was:
- What is that beeping? And why are those warning lights flashing on the dashboard?
- Because I turned the engine off.
- Why?
- Because I won't be needing it for the next few hundred meters.
- Oh, OK.

My Grandma says that about anyone who pushes their car instead of driving it a few meters. She always says bad things about "those cheapskates" who would push their car in line to the gas station during the fuel shortages a few decades back. Recently I've started taking that as a compliment
