My Maternal Step-Grandfather served as a rear gunner on a Lancaster night bomber - the war and what he experienced as an 18 year old disturbed him until his death.

My Paternal Grandfather had a conviction that killing people was wrong so he didn't want to fight. He "did his bit" though, as a medic and saved quite a few lives in North Africa. He was a peaceful man for all his life and missed greatly too.
