Only run synthetic oil in a TDI. Change it every 10K miles..... uh 15000 KM

Big +1 on the timing belt.

Also check the turbo linkage. They often are set too fast. Fred's TDI Page. TDIClub.com. VW TDI Enthusiast Community has a good how to on the turbo linkage.
