Yup! There was a local guy that had a Jeep Wrangler with a 5 cylinder Mercedes Diesel in it, even though it was set up for heavy offroading (giant lift, 35" tires, etc) he got high 20's with it. Drove it to work everyday.
When I get out of the city finally, I was thinking an old F150 with a 4BT in it would be perfect. The people who do that swap are reporting 30 mpg with 4WD and mean tires. My little wagon can only hold so much, and that's with 4x8 trailer I got going with it.
