Niki (the Bossy Collie) says to make sure they squeak, too.
She doesn't always get squeaky ones, but add a squeaky to the collection, and that's the one she plays with. And she's a specialist: she won't chase anything BUT tennis balls. Sticks, frisbees, even other kinds of balls - she just sits there and gives a disgusted look.
