Back in 2009, the non-availability of 17" LRR tires was the main reason for going down to 16" .
Another reason was that 17" rubber was 50% more expensive than 16", and the options were rather limited for the 205 width I needed.

Goodyear Assurance FuelMax in 215/55-17. That size has really exploded over here, with many new vehicles coming out with tires in that size.
There's a small premium to pay for that size over the base 215/60-16 size, at least in the checking I've done so far.
