on my ranger, it was possible to tweak the ECU into doing just about the same thing (it was an auto) where in the shifting of gears you could set it to not surpass 3k rpm. but you could allow the final drive or overdrive to use the full range of RPM.
I never did it because aftermarket tuner and the chip tuning itself was beyond my immediate financial means.

Unfortunately, the car has fly by wire throttle.
Its a manual too,s o its got the right gearbox for hypermiling
