I think this is a good way to determine your oil viscosity needs when deviating from the OEM recommendation.

Mobil1 0W-20 and 0W-30 state that they provide the same protection and warranty coverage as 5W- oils while giving up to a 2% increase in mileage.

Especially if it gets very cold where you live, a 0W oil is an advantage as far as engine wear at start-up goes and it may give you slightly better mileage.

My last oil change before winter is always synthetic 0W.
