Toyota has TSB EG018-06 on switching to 5W-20W oil in the 1NZ-FE engine that's in your Echo. The TSB does not recommend 5W-20W oil in any of Toyota's engines before the 2006 model year, and only recommends 0W-20W oil in certain 2006 and newer Toyota engines, not including the 1NZ-FE engine.

On this side of the Atlantic, we usually change oil at 12000 miles, sometimes at 19.000 miles.

Acea
European car manufacturers all specify
oils that have met ACEA oil specifications , because of that , your oils are far superior to many / most of the junk lubricants sold in America , some of the American "synthetic" oils have not been tested to any standard at all (royal Purple) and many of the rest do not meet any ACEA specifications and are not good enough to use in a lawn mower let alone the trusted chariot that will transport your family and self for 100k miles or more .
but
19000 miles is pushing the envelope

I think this is a good way to determine your oil viscosity needs when deviating from the OEM recommendation.
Mobil1 0W-20 and 0W-30 state that they provide the same protection and warranty coverage as 5W- oils while giving up to a 2% increase in mileage.
Especially if it gets very cold where you live, a 0W oil is an advantage as far as engine wear at start-up goes and it may give you slightly better mileage.
My last oil change before winter is always synthetic 0W.

If the US Oil quality is that bad, can't you buy EU-spec oils in the US ?
It could easily save 2 or 3 out of 4 oil swaps ... that's massive.
We've had 10.000 km / 6000 miles OCI for over a decade.

VW tried it as their service interval, but it's too much.

I wonder how many European cars are regularly driven on the roads with the equivalent of 400,000 kilometers on the odometer?
I watch salvage auctions every week and the average mileage of cars going through salvage auctions works out to 20k plus miles per year. With average vehicle ages here at 11 years. That's close to 230-250k miles average mileage on a lot of cars on US roads.
I have seen many cars with close to 500k miles and some with over 600. The highest I have seen was 864,000 on a Nissan Maxima Diesel.
I have recently upped my change intervals to 10k miles and even my bike has an 8k mile recommended oil change interval.
regards
Mech

Or by calendar - 12 months is mine, otherwise Toyota cancels my warranty - even if I don't need it
