I used to work installing car electronics and do all my own so learned all the tricks during the last 20 yrs!
fusing them together is the best sure way tho.

I think they can run on it's own but you can add the Arduino to handle more readings, options, and even program to run things?
I did not look much into it tho but it seems to be a open source/ programmable piece of hardware you can use to monitor and control other things. Maybe like signal your motor to do something early or turn on a warning light ?
