Hence my mod of blockages. The intake sits just behind the upper grill nostrils, so my covers will nicely shield it. I've decided against the bold approach and have some black zip-ties from work to use instead.
Now if it was a little warmer outside I would go and fit them, but instead I am cosied up next to an electric heater...
