So to improve it you would want to have a complete cover over the "valley" there. In which case, making the slope more gradual would likely help.
Still, the drag is dependent on Cd and A, and this certainly has a large A advantage over the standard Bug body. Not sure about Cd; I would guess it is a bit better.

It is the C-Pillar buttresses I mentioned.They appear too steep.If extended, the upper curve relaxed,and plan-taper continued,they will capture a fine vortex for which the outer flow stream can bounce off,jumping to the trailing edge.
This worked fine on the CRX.
Lotus,Ferrari,Lamborghini,Honda,and Bugatti have used this to good effect,as it allows good outward vision via the vertical backlight.
