Have to disagree on two counts - not everybody uses belts exclusively, some use chains.

And secondly there have been loads of problems with belts - GM revised their service schedule in Ecotec engines in the early 2000s from 100K miles to 40K when they started to fail inside the warranty period, VAG the same.

My car is brand new, (well 10 months old) has a chain cam, engine introduced in 2005.
