Here's something to look at.

I overlaid the Ideal template on your car where it would make the most sense. I'm assuming a 2005 Subaru Baja. If you'd like, I could use another car. You mentioned 10° 15° & 20°, analyzing this shows you don't want to be more than 11° above the tailgate, for optimum performance.
