kamm-back on pickup?

I have been reshaping an aluminum topper to be a fastback but would like to keep the bed open. It just occured to me that a kamm-back is not just for a car.....how would it do on a truck?

Random, since you're looking at the cross-section down the middle, you should get rid of the wheels.

Hate to pull up an old thread.

But, what about an aerocap on a pick-up WITHOUT a tailgate? (Open in the rear)

I have thought about this..I think.

If you're asking, put on an aerocap and leave the back wide open, No problem, Okie Dokie, it'll work great.

If you're asking, make an aerocap that goes from the top of the cab down to the floor of the pickup bed where the tailgate meets it, and take off the tailgate. Well, that would be an unmitigated aero disaster. You might as well just tie a 4 foot dragchute to the rear bumper. It all has to do with the angle being to steep, and then the sides would still be there too. You would create some epic vortices by doing this, these would really add a ton of drag.

If you fill in some more info here, I could tell you more specifically what might work.

The first one.
Aerocap -reducing from 10 degrees, 15, then 20 at the top of the tailgate. If the tailgate is removed, I'm wondering what the flow dynamics would be.

I'm removing my tailgate soon, in lieu of a simple piece of 3/4 or 1" aluminum sheet. My Baja tailgate is obnoxiously heavy.
Triangular holes with radiused corners would keep structural integrity but reduce weight even more. I'm wondering if it would smooth some of the rear vortex.

Lately, I'm thinking of a "half" aerocap combined with a half tonneau at the rear. Split about the middle of the bed. The bed is only about 5 ft long. A flat, hinged rear tonneau would make bed access a lot easier.

Here's something to look at.

I overlaid the Ideal template on your car where it would make the most sense. I'm assuming a 2005 Subaru Baja. If you'd like, I could use another car. You mentioned 10° 15° & 20°, analyzing this shows you don't want to be more than 11° above the tailgate, for optimum performance.

Hope this helps.
