Well it's going to be pretty hard to d it then.
Miles/gallons
Fill up, drive, fill up again (preferably at the same pump), and divide miles by gallons.
You don't have to run a whole tank of gas thru to figure it, but it will be more accurate the more you use.
Say the pump kicks off 0.1 gal different than the time before.
If you only used a gallon of fuel your reading will be 10% off.
If you've used 8 gallons of fuel your error is now only 1.25%.
