I guess i could just fill up the tank (8 gal.) and run it until it stops. Then maybe I'd have a crude reading.

Haha, That's one way to do it. I'm pretty much in the same boat as you though. I'm currently restoring a '73 Standard Beetle that I'm hopefully going to get up and running this summer.

Right now I haven't even touched the engine, as it seems to be in working order. It's a 1600cc. Once I get a little bit more money saved up I'm probably going to go to town on it with a more fuel efficient cam, lighter parts, etc, in an attempt to increase mileage.

What kind of fuel pump does yours use? Electric or mechanical?
It's not really a matter of economy, but of personal safety.
I've heard that the electric ones are a bit more dangerous in the event of a fire.

If you can't figure out your gas mileage then I recommend finding your last math teacher and smacking them up side the head.

the only reason I can see for keeping the running boards is to protect the car from rocks that are kicked up.

Oh, wait. there is one way to help, Give me the basic formula that you used to calculate your mileage.

I don't want to fill my tank everytime I feel like calculating my MPG.

Well it's going to be pretty hard to d it then.

Miles/gallons

Fill up, drive, fill up again (preferably at the same pump), and divide miles by gallons.

You don't have to run a whole tank of gas thru to figure it, but it will be more accurate the more you use.

Say the pump kicks off 0.1 gal different than the time before.
If you only used a gallon of fuel your reading will be 10% off.
If you've used 8 gallons of fuel your error is now only 1.25%.

I always thought that the pre-66 fender/ headlights were more aero, just a theory, but definatley better slope angle. Is yours a "super"
