the benz I-5 turbodiesel is one of the best engines ever built. certainly more durable than MB's more recent TDs. it would be a great engine for it. but, you are right about not pulling it from a good SD. that would be a shame. wasn't aware there were still any w116 bodies still out there that hadn't completely oxidized themselves to death.
i think going with the old stovebolt is the way to go. does anyone make a TBI system for it? might get decent mileage with that and tall gears.
