Oh no! I just found a 1981 300SD 225k miles for just $1k, EPA shows they get mpg in the mid 20's. Just when I was about to decide on a 6.2L, and about the same price as 6.2 trucks around here. Trouble is it's a nice car, hate to pull it apart for a fixer upper.
Anyone know much about OM617's, it's a turbo

Also you might look at some of the Jeeps from the mid 2000's had MB turbo diesels available, both 4 cylinder and v-6's.

300sd was the world's first turbocharged production diesel sedan. Those engines are legendary and still praised by Mercedes taxi drivers all over the globe. With good care they can go for intergalactic miles.
Got any pics of the car?

I came across several discussions elsewhere as I read around the Net on BSFC Maps and the Big Three truck diesels.

Hey lowglider, you know that feeling you get when you see a deal but aren't sure until it's too late. Well, that 300SD was in really good shape but I wasn't sure. It's not on CL anymore so... I didn't jump because I don't know nutin about MB's and wasn't sure the trans could last another 200,000 miles. I really didn't want another car, I'm trying to cut back.

I decided to put another 235 or 261 stovebolt back into the '53. It's made for it and is the cheapest route to get it moving under it's own power again. Simple to maintain. Hopefully I can get up near 20mpg. Stovebolts sure have a odd looking combustion chamber.
Anybody running one of these engines?

An overdrive transmission is probably the biggest thing you could do to improve mileage in that car. I know that a lot of GM parts interchange. Would a transmission like the 5 speed in my truck bolt in? It's got a 0.73:1 fifth gear and a first gear that will pull stumps with one of those engines.

The early GM inline six (up until ~62?) used a different transmission bolt pattern than the V8s (SBC and BBC, plus later engines with the same pattern). You may have a hard time finding a decent, modern, OD tranny to mate up to it, although there are adapter kits.

the benz I-5 turbodiesel is one of the best engines ever built. certainly more durable than MB's more recent TDs. it would be a great engine for it. but, you are right about not pulling it from a good SD. that would be a shame. wasn't aware there were still any w116 bodies still out there that hadn't completely oxidized themselves to death.
i think going with the old stovebolt is the way to go. does anyone make a TBI system for it? might get decent mileage with that and tall gears.
