So, would you argue for 170mph as the new "supercar" ballpark?
I haven't driven or ridden in an XJ-S but I have been a passenger in an XJ-12 (pre-XJ40) which was totally silent....

...at 140.

No, my point is that it is not just a simple thing such as "top speed" which marks out a supercar from another car. A BMW 335d is not a supercar, but it is fast. Neither is an M3 IMHO. Both of those have higher top speeds than (for example) a Lancia Stratos. and probably better handling.

But given a choice which one would you rather be loaned for a day, a fast "salesmans" toy or a purpose built performance machine ?

Take this further - this is a supercar :

But it is slower than this

which isn't. This isn't a supercar (although it is an iconic classic in some places)

but it is faster than this

which most definitely is. This is a supercar

but this isn't, but is about 40MPH faster - and a damn good classic.

There isn't really a solid definition - as I said its like a definition of porn vs art - try and write one and you can't. But if you an example of both you know the difference.

I hope.
