A BMW cannot by definition be a supercar, except an M1 of course which is totally. The problem is the definition of Supercar. Guy Kawasaki of Apple (I think) once said that "good software is like good pornography, you can't define what it is but you can recognise it if you see it" - or something like that. What is a Supercar kind of matches that dilema.

Now I got to post this and see if it appears

LOL! listen to Mr "diesel GTI"

anything over 150mph stock out the factory is pretty good...

Agreed though, defining a supercar is somewhat difficult..

"Arr yoo 'avin' a goo at moi drakker ? Get orf moi laand"

Well 150 used to be pretty good - I remember an article in the 80s when a magazine attempted to confirm that an XJ-S HE would do 150 so they took it to Nardo. It managed 150 (152 I think on one run so they declared it a success ) and the article ended with the line "the XJ-S is a mighty car" - but now the top of the line Insignia or Mundano will come pretty close with an engine half the size and getting at least 2-3 times the MPG in normal use. Even a Diesel Audi or (gasp) BMW will get to close to 150 with the dog in the back.

Yeah, but the XJ-S HE is a supercar because it EXCELLED at one thing- SOUND

plus the HE did 8mpg- thats livable

So, would you argue for 170mph as the new "supercar" ballpark?

I think this is supposed to be a thread about Ferraris with couches strapped to the roof and fun stuff like that.

Unfortunately, I'm fresh outta them..

sold the last one to Frank Lee as a replacement for the f150..

Last I saw, he was struggling to fit carpet under the "hood" over the v12

I haven't driven or ridden in an XJ-S but I have been a passenger in an XJ-12 (pre-XJ40) which was totally silent....

...at 140.

No, my point is that it is not just a simple thing such as "top speed" which marks out a supercar from another car. A BMW 335d is not a supercar, but it is fast. Neither is an M3 IMHO. Both of those have higher top speeds than (for example) a Lancia Stratos. and probably better handling.

But given a choice which one would you rather be loaned for a day, a fast "salesmans" toy or a purpose built performance machine ?

Take this further - this is a supercar :

But it is slower than this

which isn't. This isn't a supercar (although it is an iconic classic in some places)

but it is faster than this

which most definitely is. This is a supercar

but this isn't, but is about 40MPH faster - and a damn good classic.

There isn't really a solid definition - as I said its like a definition of porn vs art - try and write one and you can't. But if you an example of both you know the difference.

I hope.

This one, I would say no. But as I tapped this is a flexible definition - someone else may have a different opinion.
