I am a diesel mechanic by trade. I have run GM diesels over the last 30 years. Back in the early 80s I stuck a 4.3l Olds v-8 diesel in a 68 Vista-cruiser. It was a huge car and got 25 mpg even with a non-overdrive th-400. I drove this for several years. I put together an 84 GMC crew cab on a Suburban frame with all 1-ton running gear. I am running a 2000 6.5 with a db-2 pump, a bullet proof 700-r4 and 4.56 gears. I tow a 10,000 lb 3 axle trailer from Oregon to Seattle every year. The truck gets 17 mpg empty and about 10 towing. I have no plans of ever replacing this truck- it does exactly what I want.
