That'll be addressed in North America when GM starts selling the Spark, with a 1.2 L motor (though you can be assured it will be geared in such a way that it gets the same or worse mpg than the Sonic 1.4L turbo

Since it's a world-wide platform, other markets receive a Non-turbo 1.4L or 1.6L DCVCP (among others), and likely offer better FE.

A smaller-displacement, less power engine should be available to increase FE.

Europe gets 2 diesel engines in this platform (still called Aveo there, and in most markets)
Specs:
- 1.3-litre VDCi diesel
- same engine used in GM's Opel/Vauxhaull Corsa
- either 74 bhp or 94 bhp
- both versions come with an auto start/stop system
- an "Eco" version is cleanest (95 gm/km) & lowest fuel consumption, rated 78.5 mpg (Imperial gallon) combined = 3.6 L / 100 km = 65.4 mpg (US gal) on the European test cycle
- "Eco" trim is top of the Aveo line, and gets other stuff like LRR tires, cruise control, electric windows, etc.

GM has said they're bringing diesel to the Cruze in the US. Since the drivetrain in the Sonic/Aveo is straight out of the Cruze, there's no technical reason it might not appear in this vehicle too.
