Another thing that's worth noting is the NOx is a local pollutant. By that I mean that any effect that is may have is going to be limited to the local area. I you don't live in an area that has NOx issues (primarily smog), you can make the argument that it's doing no significant harm.

On the other hand, removing the NOx emissions control device increases fuel efficiency and therefore reduces CO2 emissions. Unlike NOx emissions, CO2 emissions are of a concern on a global scale, not local.

So, the case can actually be made that you're helping emissions.
