What happens is, large images load first "full size"; after they are loaded they reduce down to the EM display size (600 x 400 or whatever) so that even though- eventually- the reduced size is displayed, you have to sit through the ginormous version being loaded anyway. The automatic size reduction is nice in that following posts are not 3' wide, so one doesn't have to scroll side-to-side to read them.
I usually browse with Chrome and sometimes IE.
