Now can we eliminate the high-res pics that are 3 feet wide and take 20 minutes to load?

No - get something better than a can with string, or turn off pics in your browser. Your slow speed aint my issue frankly...

Usually I simply decide that page isn't worth looking at and move on to the next one.

I always resize pics I post such that they are within that EM reduced-size "limit" or are very close to it. I figure there must be many out there without 3' screens. I guess that's just me though.

Even the "high speed" service here sux (pay a lot more and get a very little bit more) so really I don't have the options surfers in more urban areas do.

Then there are those that endlessly quote the same pics over and over and over again. Thanks a bunch!

I've noticed the size limit is not enforced, pics are automatically resized - hmmm. Your browser should only load each picture once - if you scroll whilst there are 2 copies showing you should see them both fill in at the same time.

Firefox - try about:config and then filter the list to "image" and see if those settings help.

What happens is, large images load first "full size"; after they are loaded they reduce down to the EM display size (600 x 400 or whatever) so that even though- eventually- the reduced size is displayed, you have to sit through the ginormous version being loaded anyway. The automatic size reduction is nice in that following posts are not 3' wide, so one doesn't have to scroll side-to-side to read them.

I usually browse with Chrome and sometimes IE.

Arguing about how people post pictures on the internet is a lost cause. The web is the wild wild west and no matter how annoying some things are you just can't change them. I always post my Flickr pics at 640px. You're welcome.

Enough of the thread-jacking though. If you want to discuss it further please make a separate thread.

No problem. See the link in Arragonis' signature

The iPhone should take larger resolution pics than that!

After a little research, it appears you can get the full size images by connecting your phone to the computer with a USB cable and opening iPhoto (mac) or Scanner and Camera Wizard (PC).
