My 2001 S10 did come with 3.42:1 gears. They are about right for all-around use with the torquy V6.

New off the lot my S10 was consistently getting between 20 - 21 MPG highway.
After a pretty good collection of mods it was getting between 24 - 25 MPG. That's right around a 20% gain. It's not a lot but pickups can be difficult to work with in this area.

What cam swap?
