that does sound like an awful high gear for a 4 cylinder to pull, but, it might be possible on level ground at around 40-45 mph where wind drag has not really started kicking his arse yet.

I doubt such a gear would pull 65 though or anything resembling a hill. Headwinds are probably out as well.

You would have to look into your PCM's calibration values, or use a WBO2 AFR gauge to find out. It's not a certain RPM, but combination of conditions that determine the load on the engine. High gear ratios add significant load to the engine.

Getting rid of vehicle mass, improving aero, and increasing the engine's low RPM torque are ways to lessen the load at a given cruise speed/gearing.

Are you sure about the 2.41 rearend ratio? If your tires are about 215/75R15, then that would be about 750 revolutions per mile. Multiply by 2.41 equals 1800 RPM at 60 MPH. If your fifth gear is 0.73, then fifth gear RPM at 60 MPH equals 1320 RPM.

I don't see how that engine can pull that truck in fifth gear without significant aeromods and LRR tires.

Okay... My friend is thinking a set of gears out of an v6 s10 . I believe they are 3.42 ... I know with a cam swap, lowering, aero mods, and the tires he just installed we ought to be able to get close to 40.... No mods at all he just knocked down 26 mpg..

My 2001 S10 did come with 3.42:1 gears. They are about right for all-around use with the torquy V6.

New off the lot my S10 was consistently getting between 20 - 21 MPG highway.
After a pretty good collection of mods it was getting between 24 - 25 MPG. That's right around a 20% gain. It's not a lot but pickups can be difficult to work with in this area.

What cam swap?

Should be able to find a cam with lower lift and mainly lower duration to bring peak torque down lower in the rpms.. Then you can install taller gearing and taller gears... We will see...

Ok, so this is my first post here and it is also my truck we are talking about The truck has no problem cruising now at 50 mph. My daily commute will be mostly interstate so my thinking is that if change the rearend then i could cruise at a higher speed and stay out of 5th gear around town. Anyway ordered an Ultra Gauge and it should be here tomorrow so we will have better numbers then. Earlier a reference was made to fuel enrichment? When does this happen and how can I identify it on the Gauge?

I don't use ultragauge.
On a wide-band O2 sensor you would see your AFR drop from 14.6:1 to something lower.

This place regrinds cams for economy:
Delta Camshaft

Depending on the individual calibrations you may be able to fool the PCM to keep it out of fuel enrichment for most of the time.
For instance a TPS tricker could possibly do much of this.
Keep in mind that the enrichment is there for a reason, and part of that reason is to avoid possible engine damage under some conditions.
When you are pushing the engine loading and/or the tune, you want to keep an eye on both spark-knock sensor output, and your AFR.

There are phone apps like DashCommand that may help you do that with OBD2 systems.
