Resistor limits current from arduino to backlight controlling transistor. If it’s not installed it might overload arduinos processor and baclight controlling transistor. Overloading can happen regardless of backlight brightnes as long as its on and can result in damaging both the transistor and processor. So install the resistor before you use it.
