Is there no "check engine" light showing in the instrument cluster?
I once had very similar driveability problems on my car with poor power, lots of soot in the exhaust & horrible fuel economy (~20 mpg in a car that should return 50+). It turned out to be a vacuum leak -- a split hose -- and it did not set off the check engine light.
