From what I understand, on automatics you leave in D, and when you stop and hold the brake, the car cuts the engine. As soon as you let go of the brake, the engine restarts.

On manuals, when you stop, put it in neutral and let the clutch out, it cuts the engine. When you press the clutch to get into gear, the engine restarts.

I've never seen or driven either system, so someone who has first hand experience, please confirm or correct me.
