No more stick-shifts

My wife and I have been retired for five years now, and we have stopped driving sticks.

We are looking at the EX with the Convenience package because it
has the back-up cam and a few other items we like.
Added to that will be the Eco package, which I think will include ISG..

I don't plan on having my wife hypermile, but with a real-time MPG display,
I'm very hopeful that I'll be able to teach her the benefits of things like
driving slightly under the speed limit and not taking off, when the light
turns green, like it was a drag race..

It's got a 6-speed AT+OD and should do okay.
I can get 40 MPG (@ 40 MPH on flat road) with my Escape with a 6-speed AT,
that little Rio should be able to do a lot better (for a light-footed driver).

They have that ISG feature on the manual Euro versions though.

Actually, stop/start functions are often not available on automatics over here in Europe ...

Of course they do, because people know how to drive in Europe, and actually care about the environment.

How does that work? Do you have to shift into 'N' at a stop light?

You are right! In the USA, we have millions of Cows releasing greenhouse gases..
But, no one here cares!!

In the UK, at least they are developing hardware to combat the problem!

From what I understand, on automatics you leave in D, and when you stop and hold the brake, the car cuts the engine. As soon as you let go of the brake, the engine restarts.

On manuals, when you stop, put it in neutral and let the clutch out, it cuts the engine. When you press the clutch to get into gear, the engine restarts.

I've never seen or driven either system, so someone who has first hand experience, please confirm or correct me.

"On manuals, when you stop, put it in neutral and let the clutch out, it cuts the engine. When you press the clutch to get into gear, the engine restarts. "

Sounds logical. Those three events are logically ANDed together to turn the engine off.

I'll bet it has a 1st gear sensor to enable the clutch-coming-up starting cycle..

Clutch + neutral sensor - also used in the circuitry to stop the engine.

Engine restart is usually initiated by pressing in the clutch pedal.
