Speed vs. fuel economy: 2010 Jeep Patriot 2.4 CVT 2WD graph/chart

This weekend, I drove a friend's 2012 Jeep Patriot from Ontario to Nova Scotia, about 1800 km (~1100 miles). It's the 2.4L 4-cylinder engine, automatic CVT. 2-wheel drive.

It just so happened it was a calm early morning when I left, so since I was going to be driving through one of my two ideal (smooth & level) "test courses", I did a speed vs. fuel consumption test with the Jeep.

Note that these were not paired & averaged (E/W) runs. I just did one run at each speed (ie. went one direction, turned around and bumped up the speed for other direction. Rinse & repeat).

Where there's a datapoint missing for a speed, it's because of (a) interference from other traffic, or (b) I screwed up the ScanGauge reset.

Conditions:

9 degrees Celsius /
Wind: light, N/W (6 km/h / 4 mph) That was a direct cross-wind on this NE/SW road.

Results:

KM/H / MPH ... MPG (US) ... L/100 km ... MPG (Imperial)

50 / 31.1 ... 32.3 ... 7.3 ... 38.8
70 / 43.5 ... 31.5 ... 7.5 ... 37.8
80 / 49.7 ... 29.3 ... 8.0 ... 35.2
90 / 55.9 ... 28.3 ... 8.3 ... 34.0
100 / 62.1 ... 26.2 ... 9.0 ... 31.5
120 / 74.6 ... 22.9 ... 10.3 ... 27.5
130 / 80.8 ... 19.2 ... 12.3 ... 23.1

EPA rating for this drivetrain is: 21 / 25 / 23 MPG (US) city / hwy / combined: Gas Mileage of 2010 Jeep Patriot

On this drive, I also learned some interesting things about the CVT (continuously variable transmission) - specifically, how to "short shift" it in manual mode. See: http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...rly-21149.html
