Correct.

One way to know if it is working is that a carburetored (sp?) engine without DFCO will cackle like mini backfires as the unspent fuel burns off in the hot manifold. My dad's old '71 Ford truck made all sorts of racket going downhill when he engine braked, and so did my old 80 Datsun 210. Kinda makes me remember the old days.....

But anyway, if your vaccuum lines are intact, sounds like you should trust the engine to do its job.
