Some people will hate you for pointing out problems that they (also) face, but that they don't want to admit to, or get to grips with.
They actually do want to
shoot the messenger, hoping the bad news will go away with him.
That's why you don't see them when fuel is more affordable: the bad news has subsided, and the messenger proven to be an idiot from their PoV.
