Efficient use might stretch things out a few more months societally. Maybe a few years. I wouldn't lay money on it, but I would want to get my costs as low as possible. Selling the suburban house makes a lot more sense than a Prius in a 70-mile daily commute. Even if it is a money-loser at the outset. A world without gasoline (easily, cheaply available) is what to bet upon. May not happen, or may happen with adjustments. But the fewer of those, the better. CYA.
So a car that is affordable in all respects (common parts, tire size, etc) makes more sense to me.
If I was a young guy today . . and it got me laid . . I'd have recycled condoms if that was "the thing". The rest is fluff.
